Climate Change - The Challenge

Climate Change is the most critical challenge facing the world today. Rising global temperatures have resulted in changes in weather patterns, rapidly melting glaciers, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. The effects of these are increasingly being felt across the globe, but millions of people, and eco-systems in certain regions will be the most severely affected.

The main reason behind climate change is the increasing levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is the direct outcome of increased burning of fossil-fuels such as coal, oil and gas that is required to meet our growing energy demands and increasingly consumerist lifestyles.

Development Alternatives was one of the first institutions to initiate climate change programmes to enable government, industry and communities to meet the emerging challenges of climate change. The nation-wide Community Led Environment Action Network (CLEAN-India) programme of Development Alternatives that works with school children and communities to make them environmentally aware and active has risen to the challenge of combating climate change.

The Carbon Calculator developed by Development Alternatives was launched on Earth Day, 2008 and has been customized for Indian users. It will not only help you estimate your carbon footprint but goes a step further in suggesting simple ways in which you can minimize your impact on climate change.
