Electricity is mostly generated in power plants that burn coal releasing enormous
amounts of greenhouse gases into
the atmosphere thereby causing climate change.
These
are a few simple things you can do to conserve power and cut emissions: |
|

|
- Replace incandescent bulbs with energy saving CFLs (Compact Fluoroscent
Lamps) or LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), which use up to 80% less energy and last
ten times longer.
- Switch off lights when a room is not used – even for short periods.
- Allow natural sunlight into your home and office whenever possible
instead of switching the lights on.
- Unplug your appliances when not in use. The standby mode
consumes power.
- When shopping for electrical appliances go for models with
energy efficient ratings that use up to ten times less energy. Look for the
government certified Energy Star labels ranging from 1 to 5 stars, the higher number
denoting greater efficiency.
- Raise the thermostat setting of your air conditioner. For
every degree rise over 22°C you will save 5% of the current power consumption.
Fans require much less power as compared to an air conditioner and may be used in
conjunction with the air conditioner at a lowered temperature setting for satisfactory
cooling impact.
- Make sure windows and doors are sealed. Efficient insulation will
dramatically reduce power requirements for heating and cooling purposes.
- Shade your air conditioning unit to save as much as 10% of power consumption.
- Dry your laundry in the sun instead of using the dryer.
- Go for Green Power. Use solar heaters, solar cookers and solar lanterns.
Produce solar electricity at home by installing photovoltaic panels.
