Transportation Electricity Waste & Recycling Water Going Green
The green cover of our cities and villages are constantly being depleted and the tropical rainforests that were majorly instrumental in maintaining the atmospheric CO2 levels are vanishing at an astonishing pace, thanks to our increasingly consumerist greed for more. These are a few simple things you can do to cut emissions:
  • Plant more and more trees, particularly of the native varieties that are adapted to local conditions and require less water. Besides lending a pleasant ambience, trees soak up CO2 from the atmosphere, store it as biomass and in the process produce oxygen for us to breathe. A single tree will absorb one tonne of CO2 over it’s lifetime.

  • Planting wall creepers to cover your building’s external walls will keep the indoor temperatures down, leading to savings on air conditioning expenses and emissions.

  • Plant your own vegetable garden. Be innovative and use your balcony for the purpose even if that is all the space you can afford.

  • Use organic fertilisers like vermi-compost and cow-dung for replenishing your garden soil. Chemical fertilisers lead to the production of greenhouse gases like nitrous oxide that contribute to global warming.

  • Use organic pesticides like neem-oil. Chemical pesticides play havoc on local biodiversity and kill soil micro-organisms that sequester carbon in soil.

  • Eat only organically and locally grown seasonal fruits and vegetables. This will cut down on emissions from transportation of food from distant places.
