Almost all modes of transportation run on fossil fuels like oil and gas, the burning
of which releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Exponentially growing levels
of road and air traffic is pumping ever increasing amounts of greenhouse gases into
the atmosphere. These
are a few simple things you can do to cut emissions: |
|

|
|
|
- Drive less and walk or bike whenever possible. If you need to
visit your neighbourhood grocery, leave the car keys behind. Not only will you save
gas but will also stay fit and healthy.
- To save fuel, drive at around 40-45 km per hour and turn off the engine
if you expect to idle more than 30 seconds.
- Are you in the market for a new car? Buy a vehicle that gets better
mileage.
- Use modes of public mass transportation whenever possible.
- Build car pools with your colleagues and friends. Nowadays you
can even search online to find people who take the same route daily.
- Combine multiple errands into one trip.
- Unload all unnecessary baggage from your car – a 100 kg extra
weight uses one litre extra fuel over a distance of 100 km.
- Get your car tuned up to improve fuel efficiency. A poorly tuned
engine can increase fuel consumption by as much as 20%.
- Avoid taking flights if you can manage by teleconferencing. The
airlines industry is responsible for nearly 12% of emissions from the transportation
sector.
- Check your vehicle monthly to ensure that the tyres are fully inflated.
You will get better mileage.
