Vacation
Programme for Delhi Students
Caring for Delhi……
A joint endeavour by Department of
Environment and CLEAN-India
The Department of
Environment, Government of NCT
Delhi,
in association with CLEAN-India, Development Alternatives
organized a 2 day vacation programme for school students on
June 27th and 28th
June at the
Delhi Secretariat.
The aim of the programme was to make the
students aware of the environmental conditions in their
city, make them realize as to how their actions have an
impact of the environment, thereby making them conscious
about their behaviour and also suggesting steps which they
can take to protect the nature and its resources.
Around 30 students from various schools of
Delhi assembled at the Delhi Secretariat on 27th
June. After Registration and a brief round on Introduction
there was a presentation by Mrs Usha Srinivasan, Senior
Advisor, Development Alternatives on Delhi and various
environmental issues concerning Delhi. Thereafter Ms.
Ridhima Sud, Ms. Namita Dogra, Ms. Riti Kushwaha and Mr.
Romit Sen, Environment Professional, Development
Alternatives, made presentations on Biodiversity, Water
Treatment, Sewage Treatment and Paper Recycling
respectively. The presentations were made with the aim of
sensitizing the students before they get to see the actual
processes.
Thereafter there was a short game for the
students which involved making a Tree Puzzle. The
students worked in groups to complete the jigsaw puzzle and
also learnt their importance.
The group was then taken to the Dr Sen
Nursing home Sewage Treatment Plant. The group was
briefed about the working of the STP and they were excited
to see how the contaminated water gets purified. They were
taken to the laboratory and shown various techniques used
for detecting level of pollution in the water.
On the second Day the students left for
Yamuna Biodiversity Park to get first hand knowledge
about the flora and fauna of the Yamuna Basin.
The next visit was to the Wazirabad Water
Treatment Plant where the students were exposed to the
technique of water purification. It made them realize how
much effort and resources actually go into the purification
of our water resources and also the need to conserve water.
The students watched with keen interest each stage of water
purification with some of them trying their hand on testing
some of the parameters in the laboratory. By the end of the
visit our young friends had answers to many of their queries
on the chlorination, turbid water in their taps and how to
get their water tested by the Delhi Jal Board.
They were then taken for a visit to the
Paper Recycling Unit at the Secretariat, where the kids
tried their hands out at making paper. It was a rare
experience for them as till now they had just thrown paper
but never thought of making paper from paper itself. They
were briefed about each stage of paper making beginning with
making pulp, making sheets, squeezing water, and drying the
sheets.
The two day programme concluded with the
distribution of certificates to the students by the Smt.
Naini Jayaseelan, Secretary, Department of Environment,
Government of NCT, Delhi. She also addressed the students
and asked for their experiences of the programme at the same
time urging the students to carry out small initiatives at
their level which would play a bigger role in saving our
environment. Some of the students shared their experiences
of the two programme and made commitments which they would
undertake at an individual level.
The students also committed themselves to take small
initiatives for conserving resources and protecting the
environment. The two day programme was helpful in bringing
the young minds of the city face to face with the realities
with regard to some of the environmental issues of Delhi and
in sensitizing the young minds to work for saving the
environment of our city, Delhi. |
