Community Environment
Action for Sustainable Development in India
The project envisages Community based Environment
Improvement Actions which will be carried out by NGO partners
along with students, communities, local governments.
The programme involves carrying out 57 major
actions including water augmentation by rain water harvesting,
solid waste management, setting up of water purification systems
and mini paper recycling units.
Nearly 300 minor actions will be carried out by
the partner NGOs by generating resources themselves. For water
conservation activities like tree plantation drives in catchment
areas, propagation of Eco-lawns (drought resistant plantations)
Tap water harvesting will be carried out both in schools and
communities. With regard to sanitation the activities to be
carried out includes construction of drains cum soak pits in
slums and near hand pumps, using bio-sanitizer for cleaning
drains, chanellizing sewage water for tree plantation and
construction of septic tanks in urban slums. Models for
immersion of idols in an eco friendly way would also be
developed. Clean up drives for water bodies would be carried out
with the provision for composting of the waste construction of
soak pits will require individual household contribution.
At the end of two years, at least 400 instances
of effective environmental actions would be taken by
communities at the community level with implementation of good
practices for water and sanitation throughout the selected
towns.
Apart from environmental actions on ground the
other activities include Community Mobilization and Awareness
through door to door campaigns, Focus Group
Discussions and Community Environment Assessment and Monitoring.
The
overall objective of the programme is to mobilize communities to
undertake water and sanitation improvement actions and to create
sustainable interventions for improved access to safe drinking
water. Monitoring of the actions undertaken will lead to
efficiency of the project. Once a demonstration unit is
functional it will lead to multiplication and sustainability.
