CLEAN-India MEET, 2000

The 3rd CLEAN MEET took place on Saturday,
15 January 2000 at the Delhi Public School, Mathura Road,
New Delhi.
The MEET had following major components:
|
I) Exhibits by schools: The schools demonstrated the
activities they had undertaken with CLEAN through posters and
models. The student representatives at each stall briefed the
audience about their model and further offered solutions for
environmental improvement at the individual and community
level. The innovativeness and creativity of the students came
to fore in some of the stalls where they had developed working
models.

The displays were as follows:
- River Water Quality Monitoring
by
Kendriya
Vidyalaya, Masjid Moth: The whole stretch of river
Yamuna was shown along with the names of the prominent
places on its course. A model on the sources of river
pollution, its effects etc. was also on display.
- Managing Solid Waste by
DL D.A.V, Pitampura:
The students displayed posters on the growing menace of
garbage in cities and offered solutions of which one was
vermicomposting.
- Anti Crackers Campaign by
DPS, Vasant Kunj:
The stall displayed the posters and the steps taken by the
school in conducting this campaign in their school.
- Water Harvesting by
Salwan Public School (AS):
The school has initiated a simple way of harvesting the run
off water from the water taps in their school. This water is
used for irrigating their garden and the remaining recharges
the ground water table.
- Eco - Friendly Products by
DPS R.K.Puram:
Different products that are not a drain on the environment
were displayed artistically. The products included :
recycled paper products, herbal soaps, shampoos and
cosmetics, natural holi colours, natural dyes, etc.
- Air Monitoring by
DPS Noida : The sources,
effects, monitoring and solutions to air pollution were all
displayed here.
- Water Quality Monitoring by
Montfort School:
Different aspects of water pollution were explained through
posters. Results of the water monitoring by the JAL TARA
done in Delhi under the programme were displayed. The data,
which is now on user friendly software, was up for display.
Two simple, cheap yet effective water filters, which had
been constructed by the school were also put up on display.
- Say No To Polybags by
Bluebells School : The display highlighted how one could conduct and
sustain the same campaign in ones school, along with the
issues involved in it. Paper bags made out of old newspaper
(by Montfort School) were given to each school. Each
bag had the procedure for making the same pasted on it on
one side and on the other side it carried beautiful messages
on why one should use paper bags and shun polybags.
- Tree Plantation by
Amity International School,
Noida and Carmel Convent : A colourful display of
posters on the importance of growing and preserving trees
was put up. Beautiful posters showing important features,
medicinal, ornamental properties , etc. of important
indigenous trees were also displayed. Each school also
received a sapling as a motivation to initiate and maintain
greening of their school and community.
- Paper Recycling by
D.A.V, Shrestha Vihar :
The school is actively involved in this activity
demonstrated how paper could be recycled at a small scale.
Handouts explained each step of the procedure with the help
of illustrations.
- Medicinal Plants by
DPS Mathura Road and Ramjas
School, R.K.Puram : The stall was put near the
"Herb Corner" of the host school and had different
medicinal plants growing which were also labelled. Colourful
posters on the uses of different medicinal plants were also
put on the occasion. There was also a demonstration by
students on how to actually use a few of the plants for our
daily purpose was . An informative calendar on Medicinal
Flowers was given to each school by CLEAN.
- Visiting CLEAN-India centres from Bangalore, Ladakh,
Berinag, Kumaon and Faizabad also displayed on the
work undertaken by their member schools in their
respective cities.
Once all the schools had visited the display
of the stalls, the focus shifted to the stage. The programme was
set rolling with a street play by on the concerns of
environment.
The chief guest Shri Rajeev Talwar,
Secretary - Environment, Forest & Wildlife was then invited
to the stage along with other dignitaries. In their speeches
they urged the students to continue with their good work in the
field of environment.
" Let us spend some time and some money
in improving our lives by improving our environment" voiced
Shri Talwar. "Our tragedy is that everyone wants to do
something for the environment but wants somebody else to take
some action on their behalf. All of us have to be flag bearers
of not only a clean city but a clean India and take an oath to
transform Delhi from being the most polluted city to the
cleanest one in the world" stated Shri Talwar. Dr.Ashok
Khosla said that CLEAN aimed to make this world, full of poverty
and misery, a much better place to live in. This called for
instilling in everyone the love for environment, as environment
and development are the two sides of the same coin.
II) Pledge For a Cleaner and Greener Future
All the students undertook
a pledge in unison with the Chief
Guest to work for a better environment
III) Presentation of Reports:
Next on the agenda were presentations by
selected schools on the progress of CLEAN-Delhi in different
parts of the city.
IV) Awards Presentation
Judges evaluated the exhibits displayed by
the different schools in the CLEAN-MEET and the schools were
awarded prizes. All students who had participated in the
programme in 1999 were awarded Certificate of Participation. As
token of appreciation for their efforts in co-ordination of the
programme at the school all teachers were awarded certificates
and one year subscription of the magazine " Down To Earth
". In the end the best CLEAN-Delhi School of the Year
Rolling Trophy was awarded to Blue Bells School. The school
received a camera and CLEAN rolling trophy .
