The mega event had the following major components:

Panelist at the Open Parliament in  CLEAN MEET

  • A first of its kind, digital water quality map for Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon was launched on this day. The map is a compilation of the extensive data collected by our army of children by regular water quality monitoring under CLEAN-Delhi since 1996. With a click of a mouse one can now find the quality of water (both Delhi Jal Board and Ground water quality) for a particular area.

  • Open Parliament: Here the students addressed the panel of experts with their experiences and findings. The issues dealt during the open parliament were – drinking water quality and the trees under threat in the city.

One major activity of CLEAN-Delhi has been the seasonal monitoring of drinking water quality. During the open parliament session, the students made presentation covering the process of water quality monitoring, their findings and initiatives taken by them in spreading awareness among communities. They also mentioned some of the actions taken up by them such as distribution of Chlorine tablets and setting up of JAL-Tara Slow Sand Filteration system. The discussions raised issues like: when children find certain problems with regards to its quality and other technical problems, whom should they address and complain to and what are the remedial measures that the Government would take.

The panelists Dr.Dilip Biswas, Mr.Mehendiratta and officials from Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Ground Water board answered the children’s questions. DJB and DGWB officials assured full support and took personal responsibility of looking into the matter.

CLEAN-India students have been doing their bit of increasing the green cover by planting and nurturing trees and plants in their schools and homes. They have also been taken for tree walks and have undertaken tree surveys. In their presentation in the Open Parliament, students reported that their investigations revealed that many roadside trees in Delhi are either dying or battling for their survival due to the rampant tiling and unnecessary concretisation of pavements, central verges etc. The students also talked about the other avoidable threats the trees are frequently subjected to like the non removal of tree guards on time, nailing of hoardings and advertisements on trees, frequent digging near the tree roots by various agencies, burning leaves / waste under them, etc. The children also presented the initiatives taken by them - Detiling, removal of tree guards and nailed advertisements in some areas like Vasant Kunj, Saket, R.K.Puram etc.

The panellists Mr.Yogesh, Dy.Conservator of Forests, Mr.D.P.Singh, Director of Horticulture of MCD, Mr.Sharma and Mr.N. Ahmed, Directors of Horticulture of NDMC and Mrs.Khullar responded to the queries. Mrs.Khullar assured the children that the Tree Helpline team would assist in providing saplings, know-how on tree care, respond to queries and complaints. Mr. Yogesh informed the children that any crime against trees should be reported to tree officers who would, in turn, take necessary action.
