MILESTONES
DEAN Mela - A Display of Child Power


A DEAN Mela was organised at the National Stadium in New Delhi on 16-17 January 1998. More than thousand students from 40 schools attended the Mela. The programme included:

  • Display of DEAN concept
  • Achievements
  • Findings of water quality
  • Public hearing : Attended by officials of Ministry of Environment and Forests, CPCB, Delhi Police, DPCC, Vikram Sarabhai foundation, Central Ground Water Board, Delhi Water Supply and Sewage Disposal Board, and other NGOs.

At the public hearing children presented their concerns on Delhi’s environment and raised issues to challenge the authorities to join hands and facilitate their mission - 'the right to a cleaner and healthier environment'. The public hearing raised issues like :
* Banning cigarette smoking in public places
* How to face power cuts without use of diesel generator sets.


Painting competition at DEAN Mela 

* Cleaning of Yamuna

* Provision of renewable sources of energy to provide electricity to 1/3rd of our villages having no electricity.

Besides stalls of participating schools there were poster competition, environmental quiz and a street play by students of Naval Public Schoo
l.
