ENERGY WATCH

What Can You Do To Conserve Energy?

You must be experiencing the erratic power supply at your homes.  Especially during summers, when the mercury soars and there is a power cut it causes a lot of anger in us.  And very often we blame the government for being inefficient and not supplying continuous power.  Have you ever wondered how conscious you are about energy usage at home?   How about conducting a  “Power survey” at home and practising some energy conservation tips at home and becoming an  “Energy Champ”.

Lighting:

  • Turn off lights & fans whenever they are not in use. Open curtains and blinds till you have natural day light

  • Switch to CFL lights wherever possible. A 40 W tubelight is equivalent to 100 W  bulb.(30-38%)

  • Use dimmer switches and/or timers. (7-10%)

  • Keep bulbs , tubes, etc. clean - dust can decrease lighting levels by 20 to 30%.

 Refrigeration:

  • Operate the refrigerator at normal settings.

  • Keep the condenser coils clean of dust and well ventilated

  • Check the door gasket for a tight seal.

  • Decide what you want before opening the refrigerator door.  Open the door as less as possible.

  • Wait till food or milk cools before putting in the fridge.

  • Defrost fridge regularly

 Television/VCR and Audio Systems Use:

  • Turn them off when they aren't being used.

  • Cut back on use.  There are thousands of other things to do.  (How many can you name?)

  • Take good care of them so that they last longer

 Cooking:

  • When food needs to be thawed prior to cooking, let it thaw on the counter or in the refrigerator, rather than heating it.

  • Cook complete meals of several dishes at once.  Make enough for leftovers.

  • Except when baking, don't preheat ovens.  Turn the oven off before the dish is completely cooked.

 Water Heating

  • Set water heater at optimum temperature level

 Space (Air) Heating and air-conditioning

  • Rather than turning heaters and air conditioners on, adjust your clothing appropriately.

  • Adjust the thermostat. (Lower the heater and raise the air conditioner thermostats)         (5-20%).

  • Provide shading for air conditioning condenser.  (5-11%)

  • If you use ACs at home reduce the opening and closing of doors.

Clothes Washing and Drying:

  • Operate clothes washers and dryers only with full loads.

  • Use a clothesline instead of a dryer.

  • Use cold water washes and rinse when possible.

  • Be sure the lint filter is clean.

All Appliances and Other Energy Users:

  • Keep all appliances in good working order and make them last as long as possible.

  • Use  solar power appliances if possible
