TO BEGIN WITH, WHAT PLANTS CAN YOU GROW
?
Come, lets revive the old traditions and in
return earn a healthy life. Almost all plants in this world possess some medicinal
property or the other. Some have a lot of medicinal value
e.g.. Neem or
Tulsi and some may be easily used at homes without much
processing. Find out about such plants and try to grow
them both in the school and your house. A few other
medicinal plants you can easily grow are suggested below. If
you don't already have them growing in your house, they may be obtained from any good
nursery or even your friends.
- Shoe-flower, Hibiscus
(Hibiscus rosa-sinensis)
: Only the five petaled red flowered hibiscus has medicinal
value. It treats fevers, strengthens hair, etc.
- Clove,Laung (Piper longum): From tooth aches to
digestive disorders, coughs to cholera, earaches to asthma,
clove is the answer.
- Henna (Lawsonia inermis): Apart from being
used to decorate hands and colour hair, henna helps in
treating baldness, dysentery, headaches... .
- Pomegranate (Punica granatum) : A good
appetizer, also cures worms. sore eyes, etc.
- Tulsi, Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) : Worshipped
in houses, the air purifying tulsi can also keep fevers at bay, if
you only swallow a few leaves every morning.
- Curry Patta (Murraya koenigi) : An aromatic and
ornamental shrub, leaves are used in many Indian dishes and
are good in treating digestive disorders, premature graying of
hair, diabetes, etc.
- Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon
citratus) : An
aromatic grass, add a little to your tea for a refreshing
taste. Good for cold, etc.
- Calendula (Calendula
officinalis) : The plant
with the bright saffron flowers, is excellent first aid for burns,
scalds, stings and wounds.
- Kumari (Aloe
vera) :
This cactus is
used in numerous cosmetics, is good for our skin, hair, liver,
stomach.....
- Garden Balsam (
Impatiens balsaminia): Commonly
cultivated, has sacred value and medicinal value. Flowers used
for dying finger nails.
- Rangoon Creeper, Madhumalti
(Quisqualis indica): Grown
as an ornamental plant, is beneficial in diarrhoea, fever,
rickets, abdominal pain.
- Aswagandha (Withania somnifera):
Esteemed for
its rejuvenating capacity, it is believed to impart long life,
youthful vigour and intellectual power.
