Greening and Global Cooling Programme

CLEAN-India and Greening Initiatives

CLEAN-India in partnership with Trees for Future, Trees For The Future is an organization that has been the steward of planting trees throughout the world since the early 1970's, organised few workshops with Delhi schools keeping the aim of “Greening and Global Cooling Programme” in mind.

Tree plantation drives are conducted during the monsoons in various schools and communities under the CLEAN-India programme. Through these plantation drives, students learn the importance of planting local, native indigenous trees. This activity also helps in making the students realise the importance of trees in our lives and more importantly that nurturing tree saplings is not an easy task. The importance of protection of trees is also highlighted. CLEAN –India students interact with local communities and involve them in carrying out tree plantation in their respective areas. Communities are encouraged to nurture the saplings and look after the young plants till they are fully grown. Students and the community groups also receive support from the horticulture / forest department for procuring hardy and indigenous species.

The Greening and the Global Cooling Programme

CLEAN – India is working with schools in Delhi to partner with “Trees for Future” for working on the Greening and Global Cooling programme. To initiate the programme in Delhi following 5 schools were selected:

  • Salwan Public School (Morning), Rajender Nagar
  • Sanskriti School, Chanakyapuri
  • Delhi Public School , Gurgaon
  • DAV Public School, Shreshta Vihar
  • Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar

An orientation workshop was organised for all the schools where they were briefed about the programme, its objectives and the plan of action. Each school formed a team of 10 students who would constitute the core team and spread the message to others in the school.

An informative brochure was prepared which was distributed amongst the students and teachers. The brochure highlighted the importance of growing trees especially native trees and also how do they help in abating global warming. There was a list of native trees of Delhi and a note on Dry Garden.

On the basis of initial orientation the students decided to perform the following tasks:-

  • Identify the trees growing in the school,
  • Research on the importance and usefulness of each and every tree growing in their school,
  • Make an inventory of the trees growing,
  • Map the trees
  • Prepare herbaria and seed bank

The schools were given one month time to prepare and submit their work.
