TARA ENVIRONMENT MONITORING
AND MATERIAL CERTIFICATION FACILITY
Development Alternatives being committed
towards a clean environment started an environment laboratory
now known as TARA ENVIRONMENT MONITORING AND
MATERIAL CERTIFICATION FACILITY way back in 1990. Through
its research and development, the laboratory has developed the
following tools which are being extensively used in the
CLEAN-India programme:
Jal TARA Portable Water
Testing kit
Pawan TARA Portable Air
Testing Kit
Jal-TARA Slow Sand
Filter
Initially, the laboratory was set up to facilitate projects
relating to environmental issues within Development
Alternatives. The environment laboratory now provides
consultancy to diverse clients like civic agencies, industries,
NGOs and communities for research and analysis in the field of
air, water (including wastewater) and soil quality monitoring,
analysis and treatment.
The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated instruments like
Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (for heavy metal analysis of
air, water and soil samples), UV-Visible Spectrophotometers (for
colorimetric analysis of air, water and soil samples), Ion
meters, flame photometers, sophisticated balances ( .01mg
accuracy), conductivity meters, incubator, flue gas analyzers,
air samplers ( for ambient air quality monitoring), stack
monitoring kits, etc. The laboratory also has the facility for
proper storage of the samples.
The laboratory has a team of highly skilled scientists and
analysts who take up consultancy projects in the areas mentioned
below:
Drinking Water and Waste Water
- Water quality monitoring and analysis
(Drinking and Waste water).
- Designing of wastewater treatment plant for
industries.
- Performance evaluation of waste water
treatment plants.
- Assessment and treatment of drinking water
quality of hotels, offices, restaurants, schools, and
housing societies, etc.
- Water auditing for industries and corporate
complexes.
Air
- Ambient air quality monitoring and analysis.
- Stack monitoring and analysis.
- Performance evaluation of treatment plants
- Ventilation hood designing for industries
- Environmental auditing for design
modifications.
Soil
- Soil quality analysis (including heavy
metals) for various uses like brick manufacturing.
- Fertility test.
- Soil treatment for agricultural purposes.
TARA environment monitoring
facility is also involved in research and development of low
cost environment monitoring kits. Two popular field based kits
developed are Jal-
TARA Water Testing Kit: monitors 14 parameters for water
quality and Pawan-TARA Air
Testing Kit: monitors suspended particulate matter, sulphur
dioxide and oxides of nitrogen in ambient air. Customised kits
are also being manufactured based on different types of water
related problems existing in various parts of India like
separate kits for testing for Fluoride, Nitrate, Iron, and
Residual Chlorine.
With the aim of reducing the incidence of water borne diseases
in India, the laboratory has developed a prototype water
purification system for communities called the Jal-TARA
Slow Sand Filtration System. Based on slow sand filtration
technique, it improves the quality of water in terms of
bacterial contamination and turbidity.
